CTE Expo Reflection Journal (Senior 2020)
The objective of the CTE Expo was to introduce the incoming freshmen of that year, to the CTE academies that the school has to offer them. These academies consist of important skills that can help them shape a future career in a technical field if they were interested.
In order to prepare for the CTE Expo, I had created a pitch that I would use to introduce myself to the freshmen and get them interested in the stuff that we do at the Web Design academy. I started introducing them to the academy by telling them about the cool websites and videogames you can make with the skills you obtain in the academy.
During the actual event, I was the one approaching the freshmen to welcome them to the academy. I then asked them to follow me in order to show them my website that I created as well as one of the videogames that I made in my junior year. I explained to them how I made the game in a team of 3 people and that it took about a week. After getting their interest in the game, I let them play it and then opened their window of interest by telling them that if they joined the web design academy, they will be able to make something even better. In addition, I also explained how the 3-year course flowed and then upon concluding, I introduced them to another web designer so they didn't wander off.
In my opinion, I improved very well from the last CTE Expo greatly. I would always be shy to try and approach people and talk with them. However, being a senior gave me the confidence to show them my work without worrying about what they thought about it. Every person I approached loved the game I made, and my game was also displayed on multiple computers. I guess my career as a game developer is just beginning. I felt good getting recognition from the freshmen about my game and that I was able to inspire them to join the academy.
My overall feeling about the expo was that it was a success. Many of the freshmen looked interested and I didn't see anyone wandering around on their own and lost. We did well as the web design academy to link their interest and most likely persuaded many of them to join the academy. I was able to have student-student conversations with them, without actually seeming like a teacher or etc. I empathized with them on their thoughts that it seemed hard to code. I just answered by saying, this is no easy work, but once you attempt to learn it, you get to reap all of the benefits. I felt like I was able to be myself and give off a professional vibe to the freshmen. Since this is my last year here, I guess that means I have to leave the last impression before I take my leave. Hopefully, the web academy gets many young game developers, like what I had become myself when I first decided to join the academy.
